Anatomy of Yoga - Basics
Because student safety is a prime concern for yoga
teachers and healthcare practitioners, it is vital to have
a very strong anatomy component in every yoga teacher training program. A foundational understanding of how
the body functions is the best way to train teachers to
protect students from injury and to best serve those who have pre-existing injuries and illnesses. More than ever, teachers and practitioners need a thorough knowledge
of proper alignment and posture modifications that
help all students achieve optimal benefits of a class.
This course will enhance teacher trainees’ current
knowledge of the inner workings of the human body,
with particular attention paid to joint structure and
function. Because body types vary widely in any given
yoga class, the course will cover anatomical variations
to provide a thorough understanding of the range of
posture modifications.
The human body is complex and intricate. With his
multi-traditional training, Arturo has a gift of demystifying
the function and integration of the body’s many systems
and translating his scientific knowledge into a practical
and intriguing class format that bridges East and West. Because of his ability to create simple models that explain complicated material in a straightforward manner, this
course will especially appeal to those who may not feel comfortable in a traditional Western anatomy course.
Anatomy of Yoga - Advanced Modules Available
For yoga teachers and health care practitioners who
want to delve further into anatomy and physiology to
obtain a more advanced understanding of how our body’s systems work together, Arturo has developed these
courses to address the following topics in-depth:
Connective Tissue, Scar Tissue, and Yoga
This module focuses on fascia and scar tissue.
An important area of study for teachers who are
interested in working with injuries.
Feeling Into the Core - The Psoas, Diaphragm,
and Quadratus Lumborum. In this module students will
gain an intellectual and somatic understanding of these
deep core muscles through lecture, visuals, and palpation.
Getting to Safe - Yoga and the Fight/Flight Lifestyle
In this module students will learn about the body’s
natural alarm system that has evolved over time to keep
us out of harm’s way. Today’s modern environments, as
well as situations that induce trauma, often cause the
body to remained in a heightened awareness state even
after the danger has passed. This continually heightened awareness can prevent the body’s natural rest and
recovery cycles, leading to chronic illness, injury, and
pain. Understanding how to help students return to the natural balance of the Fight / Flight response will
be covered extensively in this module.
Joint Safety in Yoga Practice
Understanding the balance between mobility and
stability is key to create safe practices for yoga students.
In this module, students will gain an understanding of
how bones, ligaments, joint capsules, and muscles each contribute to joint happiness.
Therapeutic Yoga with Cheri Clampett and Arturo Peal
In 1998, Cheri and Arturo began teaching their widely acclaimed Therapeutic Yoga Training Program as a continuing education course for physical therapists, registered nurses, certified yoga teachers, and other health care professionals with the goal of helping teachers and practitioners to integrate therapeutic yoga into their repertoire of healing techniques.
This training is an excellent module to add to a new or existing 200-hour or 500-hour TT program. It gives yoga teachers a solid and well-rounded grounding in anatomy
by carefully and thoughtfully crafting a holistic collection
of restorative yoga, gentle yoga, breath work, guided meditation, and hands-on healing. This combination
of healing modalities focuses on helping those recovering from injury or illness, both mental and physical, as well
as those who are experiencing the effects of natural
aging, pregnancy and stress.
For over 13 years, this program has received incredible support and drawn consistent accolades from the nursing, physical therapy, and yoga communities. Graduates of
the program have applied the knowledge gained at the trainings to a wide array of hospital settings, clinics,
private practice, and specialty yoga classes.
